Lyrics 1.3

Casting Crowns
"East to West"

Here I am, Lord, and I'm drowning in your sea of forgetfulness
The chains of yesterday surround me
I yearn for peace and rest
I don't want to end up where You found me
And it echoes in my mind, keeps me awake tonight
I know You've cast my sin as far as the east is from the west
And I stand before You now as though I've never sinned
But today I feel like I'm just one mistake away from You leaving me this way

Jesus, can You show me just how far the east is from the west
'cause I can't bear to see the man I've been come rising up in me again
In the arms of Your mercy I find rest
'cause You know just how far the east is from the west
From one scarred hand to the other

I start the day, the war begins, endless reminding of my sin
Time and time again Your truth is drowned out by the storm I'm in
Today I feel like I'm just one mistake away from You leaving me this way

I know You've washed me white, turned my darkness into light
I need Your peace to get me through, to get me through this night
I can't live by what I feel, but by the truth Your word reveals
I'm not holding on to You, but You're holding on to me
You're holding on to me

Jesus, You know just how far the east is from the west
I don't have to see the man I've been come rising up in me again
In the arms of Your mercy I find rest
'cause You know just how far the east is from the west
From one scarred hand to the other
One scarred hand to the other
From one scarred hand to the other

Steve,

Where do you think music is headed?  I must confess I have never been a lyric listener, but you are calling my attention to an area of unfortunate neglect.
Steve

Rick--

Here's why I copy lyrics of songs on here:
I've been drawn to music a majority of my life, most likely through genetics.  My grandpa played several instruments, my mom played the drums, and my dad played a little guitar in their past.  I enjoy melody as much as lyrics, but I find the mix of melody and lyrics somewhat fascinating.  How a writer comes up with lyrics is fairly straight forward, but then how it is attached to music amazes me.

I am constantly amazed at all types of music and how people generate it from whatever their inspiration is.  Same goes with lyrics, specifically Christian lyrics.  Worshipping God through song was obviously written about in Psalms with David, and I listen to quite a bit of Christian music today (along with plenty of other genres).

......to get to your question......."where is music headed today?"  In terms of secular music, I think it's headed wherever the particular artist wants it to go.  I think artists are trying to be "fresh" and think of new sounds, and find their niche listeners.  Usually those listeners find something in their words that they can relate to, and like the tune/melody enough to really support that band and listen frequently.

In terms of Christian music, which I listen to quite a bit on the way to work in the morning, on the way back, etc. primarily on the radio, there are all kinds of niches within this genre that are being created.  Most of it is worship, some of it is "I'm struggling God and need you," and others are written from God's perspective to us or written from Jesus' perspective to us.

I think it's heading in the right direction, and I think that many Christian artists are creating sounds that are non-traditional, possibly to lure in non-believers to listen in, learn more, and dig deeper.

It's a long response to a short question...have you heard any good songs lately worth discussing?

On my next lyrics post, I'm going to copy a Jars of Clay song that just started playing on the radio that discusses normal Christian daily struggle to follow God.
