Reality of Shapes and ShadowsThere is an eternal drama that has been revealed before mankind. It began early and is revealed in the Old Testament; Hebrews Chapter 8 of the New Testament speaks of the transition of the drama from types and shadows to eternal reality in Jesus Christ.
Hebrews Chapter 8-Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. For every high priest is ordained…according to the law: Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things…But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second…Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant …I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people…For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
John 16:7-Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
Jesus had to finish His work of redemption before the Holy Spirit could engage mankind in this new way. The finish line of the work (on the cross) was a seat at the right-hand of God the Father.
The coming of the Comforter (Holy Spirit) to establish residence in the hearts of believers is the New Covenant. The Old Covenant pointed in types and shadows to this New Covenant. The heart of the believer is the Ark of the Covenant; these lives are the temple of God.
The Holy Spirit eternally proceeds from the Father bearing the Father’s will. In the New Covenant the Holy Spirit (sent by the finished work of Christ on the Cross) overshadows the hearts of believers, so that Jesus Christ might be born out through Christian lives.
It is the realty of God's abiding presence in our heart that we have assurance and serve Him.
John 4:24-God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
