“God is sovereign”, this is a place of rest for so many.  God is in control!  How well founded is this rest?  In regard to our life, “God is in control” when we give Him control!  We must relinquish control to God, and in that find rest.  This does not mean that in this life we curl up in a fetal position, but rather that we learn to walk by faith.

Certainly, God’s domain is eternal, thus God is sovereign.  However, God wants a personal relationship with His children, which necessitated His granting us liberty to receive, or reject, His love.

When Adam and Eve partook of the “Tree”, knowledge and responsibility for discerning “good and evil” personally fell upon mankind.  We must recognize that there are individual, family, and national consequences regarding our “faith walk”.

Genesis 3:22-24 says “And the Lord God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

When God said, “man has now become like one of us”, individual and relational sovereignty, and the responsibility thereof, were passed onto man.  Then God mercifully placed man in an environment of uncertainty (our physical universe).  It is this environment of uncertainty that enables change and redemption.  Adam and Eve’s act of misplaced faith necessitated Jesus Christ’s work of grace…grace that must be apprehended by faith.

Mathew 16:19 says “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The work of the cross, an act of perfect faith, enables mankind to be reestablished in the presence of God.  Jesus is the key!  We lay down our personal sovereignty by placing our faith in God; He becomes master of our personal life, thus making inroads into our family and our nation.

How do we bind and loose on earth and in heaven?  Binding holds something fast; it makes something certain.  A binding agreement is one that is final.  Our life journey is binding on earth as it is in heaven.  We may either be bound from heaven, or we may be bound within heaven, all depends upon our use of the “keys of the Kingdom.  To loosen is to release.  Those same keys can release God’s will in our life.

I remember when my father tossed me the keys to the family car.  I know the significance of handing employees keys to our family business.  Privilege and responsibility always include the passing of keys (Ownership).  Open access into our Father’s kingdom should be a sobering reality for Christians today.

So are you bound to a relationship with your Creator or are you bound from it?  Are you releasing God into and through your life, or are you releasing your self?  Make no mistake, we will be held accountable for having been given the Family keys.

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair. --C. S. Lewis
