Your question “Do you believe that individuals are capable of physically seeing the spiritual realm?” is a very good question that I am not sure I know the whole answer.   The Bible does provide evidence that spiritual realities can be physically manifested such as the miracles.  It also reveals that spiritual eyes (not physical) can be opened in order to see spiritual realities.

Let me share a personal experience.  Once when Andrea was offered Holy Communion by our pastor (wearing a dark suit and leather shoes) she saw a long white gown and sandaled feet.  She blinked her eyes and looked again and they were still there.  Was she imagining what she saw? Most definitely!  Was it real? Most definitely!  What she witnessed was the spiritual reality of a physical event.

Or consider the witness of a young soldier in 2 Kings 6:17, just prior to battle  “Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain [was] full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.”  Once again, spiritual eyes were opened to a spiritual reality.

In Mathew 17:1-3 Jesus was transfigured:  “And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.”

In Luke 24 we have a number of encounters with the resurrected Jesus:  Two disciples while traveling encountered: (vs. 15,16) “While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and {began} traveling with them. But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.”…(vs. 31) “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.”  And while fishing in (vs. 39,40) “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.

The difficulty with that scripture in Luke is comprehending the glorified body, which I can only imagine in part.  Notice 1 Corinthians 13:12 “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.”  We can conclude that just as there are objects, which have physical substance, there are also objects that consist of eternal substance.

Perhaps Genesis 3:7 can provide insight:   “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked.”  Instead of spiritual eyes being opened, we see the opposite, which was the opening of the physical eyes “they knew that they were naked”.

We can further speculate that physical eyes recognize transitory objects, while spiritual eyes recognize eternal objects.  Transitory objects are objects that are in transition, or change, while eternal objects do not change.  Prior to the fall, Adam and Eve may have viewed one another with a spiritual covering, and in its absence, saw physical nakedness.

Following are a few scriptures to consider regarding man seeing God:
John 1:18  “No man hath seen God at any time”
John 6:46  “Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father”
Genesis 32:30 Jacob said “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved”  (Clearly Jacob was given spiritual eyes)
1 Timothy 3:16  “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
Colossians 1:15 Speaks of Christ “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature”

That is all very interesting and it would be great to be able to have the gift of seeing with spiritual eyes or to know that you're seeing with spiritual eyes at the time you do.

Right before my Grandpa died he spoke to his pastor about seeing heaven from his spot in the hospital.  I don't know if God gives those faithful ones a final peace before death or not (i.e. opens their spiritual eyes right before they leave the physical world)?

I'd like to talk to Andrea about what she saw because if it was something as vivid as that, I would bet it would be hard pressed in the memory bank.  I always enjoy listening to stories where people have viewed life through spiritual eyes.

Thanks for sharing those verses, Rick.  That was and is a great topic!  I'd like to get other's response to it as well.

I’ve wanted to respond for some time to your interest in spiritual eyes, and how, when and why God opens them to us.  I think there are several scriptures we can reference, such as the ones Rick has mentioned, and there are, no doubt, countless others.

Clearly, there were times when God opened the eyes/ears of more than one person at the same time, such as when Christ was transfigured on the mount, or when the shepherds saw and heard the choir of angels in the fields outside Bethlehem.

When we consider the scriptures, there seems to be a discrepancy between scriptures that warn us not to seek after signs and wonders, and those where clearly miracles and spiritual encounters took place.  That could be a study in itself!

When one has a personal experience encountering the spiritual realm, it can be difficult to share with others because you know there will be those who doubt the sanity of the person/persons involved.  That’s where sharing it with one who knows you very well, and can validate the integrity of your witness, is so important.

While I can’t say I understand it all, I can only share what few experiences I have personally had throughout my years as a Christian.  Clearly, the experience Rick referenced in his article above when I was taking Communion is one of them.  I was with several people at the altar, yet none saw what I saw (at least to my knowledge!).  Not only did I see the sandaled feet, and the swish of the silky white robe as the Lord was moving from person to person to serve the bread, but I also tasted the rubbery flesh in my mouth, almost to the point of gagging!   I blinked my eyes hard, because I wasn’t sure if I had my physical eyes open or not because I had been in deep prayer.  But I heard the pastor’s voice approaching, and I didn’t want to miss my turn to receive the drink to follow, so I know my physical eyes were open.  Then when I saw the sandaled feet, I could hardly believe it, so I blinked hard again, and they were still there!!  Oh, I can’t tell you how humbled I was, I couldn’t have lifted my head if I wanted to!

I had never had this experience during Communion before, nor have I since then, but there is no doubt in my mind that what I was experiencing with my senses was the reality of the Spiritual Realm.  I was not seeking this experience at the time, but I can tell you that just prior to the experience, I was very humbled and contrite in my heart.  I remember very vividly the realization that my sin was carried to the cross, and that I was personally responsible for Christ enduring what He did…for me.  My prayer was a very personal dialogue with the Lord, and I don’t know if at that moment in time, the Lord knew I was ready for this experience, or what??

I have had other experiences, not numerous, but several others, that I can share at a later time if there is interest, but time does not permit me to keep going right now.  I can only hope that God is glorified in my sharing this experience with other believers. Praise Him!
