Rick -

I was sitting around listening to some tunes and this song came on:  Fame by Citizen Cope

What are your thoughts on this dude's writing?

Got the law man
The con man
The liquor store man
Got the man at the premiere to "Spider-Man"
Got the old man calling on the young man
Got the soul man
Trying to keep a hold man
I seen the stars lookin in her eyes
So many times I tried
Seen a man who caught the rainbow's end
He claimed
That the pot of gold resided within

For a name in the U.S.A.
For a little bit of fame today
For a name in the world today
You want to fly high
You want to fly high
You want to fly
You want to fly
You want to fly high

For a name in the world today
For a little bit of fame today
For a name in the U.S.A.
You want to fly high
You want to fly high
You want to fly
You want to fly
You want to fly high

Got the this is your land man
This is my land man
Got the blood on the tracks man
Got the guilty man
Got the innocent man
Got the buffalo soldier
The dreadlock Rastaman
Seen the stars looking in her eyes
So many times I've tried
Talked to a man who caught the
rainbow's end he found
That the pot of gold resided within

For a name in the world today
For a little bit of fame today
For a name in the U.S.A.
You want to fly high
You want to fly high
You want to fly
You want to fly

For a name in the U.S.A.
For a little bit of fame today
For a name in the U.S.A.
You want to fly high
You want to fly high
You want to fly
You want to fly
You want to fly high

While I know nothing of this individual,I always find it interesting when someone zooms out and gains a higher perspective.

As I was reading the lyrics, I wondered why we are so hungry for fame?  Is it because we cannot comprehend the significance of our full identity in Christ?

The diversity of man's pursuits are amazing!  For what do you want to be famous?

Rick -

Why are we so hungry for fame?  I don't believe I have the answer but I would offer that fame is something that some pursue and other don't pursue.  Some of those who seek it, get it.  Some of those who don't seek it, get it.  Many of those who seek it, don't get it.

What benefits does "fame" offer?  Power?  Notoriety?  Financial?

Either way it must offer enough to drive people toward's it.  The ill-hearted pursuit of fame might be the opposite of living a Christ-centered life.  Ridding of one's self is not possible during the ill-hearted pursuit of fame.  Self-focus and the ill-hearted pursuit of fame must go hand in hand.

In a different light - Can fame be used to advance Christ's plan?

Very enlightening, Rick.  You threw my name around like it's worth something and I do appreciate the mention.  I could only hope that given a scenario where fame or notoriety can advance Christ's plan, I pray I would be aware enough to do so.

Executing in that scenario is a task for the driven, focused, selfless person and is a task not to be taken lightly.

The PRIDE factor is a subconcious instinct that will normally rear it's ugly head in a situation where fame or notoriety is obtained.

I welcome the challenge to forget myself, remember Christ's blessings, realize His will/His plan is in action...and I know you would too.

As John MacArthur said in his Jan. 4th Daily Readings for a Deeper Fatih..."Every blessing you receive, whether material or immaterial, has God as its source."..."The key to spiritual progress and victory is learning to apply what you already have, not seeking more."
