Humanism is an attempt to keep the second great commandment without first loving the Lord God with all the heart, soul and mind!

Mathew 26:36-40  Master, which [is] the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.  This is the first and great commandment.  And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.  On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Throughout the first and second great commandment the word agape is used.  Agape is a selfless love. When Christ says we are to “love (selflessly love) thy neighbor as ourselves” He is prescribing a commandment that is impossible without God.

The second commandment can, without closer examination, appear to be a neighborly love born from empathy. In reality, Jesus is saying, just as God loves you (selflessly) you are to love your neighbor.

We know that we love God because He first loved us (1John 4:19), therefore the first and second commandment are impossible to keep without first receiving God’s love by faith.

Humanistic love is anchored in self-love and is capable of producing “good works” from a human perspective.

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair. --C. S. Lewis
