I just got done watching the movie Kingdom of Heaven and I never understood the idea behind the Crusades until now.  It seemed like religion and Christianity was an important part of that time period, and Jerusalem meant a lot to different religions.

I am curious as to why the muslims found Jerusalem to be the Holy Land, when it was Jesus who was crucified there.  It's interesting that Jerusalem has that kind of significance to multiple religions.  What is the truth?  Is Jerusalem the Holy Land?  What does the Holy Land mean here on Earth prior to Jesus' return?

While I have not watched the movie Kingdom of Heaven, I know that Muslims believe Mohammad ascended to heaven from the Dome of the Rock which is on the temple mount in Jerusalem.
It is fascinating that all monotheistic religions hold that small patch of land sacred for three independent reasons.
